Conecell
Clasecuador's most recent start-up (1994) became Ecuador's first mobile phone operator. Besides Clasecuador, this consortium included renowned Bell Canada, Northern Telecom (now Nortel) and Mexico's cellular operator, Iusacell (currenly owned by Bell Atlantic) as the venture's technological partners.
Conecell could be viewed as the only successful Ecuadorian privatization effort of the 90s decade.
The business plan studied previously was certainly attractive, but the reality far exceeded the most aggressive projections. Pent-up demand for telephony service of any sort was the driving force behind the outrageous demand experienced in this business. First year volume estimates were shunned threefold by the real demand.
Conecell was recently acquired by the Mexican phone company Telmex.
